DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  1. In her presentation, Louise Crabtree notes that in modern property systems: “Relationships are foregrounded that are based in exchange and speculation rather than reciprocity or embeddedness”

Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why?

How is this idea different to the ‘relationist ethos’ that Mary Graham spoke about in Week 1?

  1. How are “the commons” an alternative to private property? What difference would it make to human relationships and ‘the economy’ if we were to operate more in a ‘commoning’ mode than a ‘private property ownership’ mode’?

In his talk, Jose says that the commons often move “from being implicit to being explicit’ and he gave an example of the atmosphere.  What does he mean by this?

  1. How do cooperatives challenge the dominant economic paradigm?

Can you list a few of the key characteristics of cooperatives, and how they differ from other types of organisation?
